Ken Macha gets his wish, as Jonny Venters and Bobby Cox are suspended for Prince Fielder plunking

Jul 19, 2010, 4:48 PM EDT

I’m not sure if Ken Macha’s various complaints had anything do with it, but MLB has suspended Braves rookie reliever Jonny Venters four games for plunking Prince Fielder in the back Saturday.
Venters also threw a pitch over Fielder’s head on the previous offering after the Brewers first baseman tied the game with a homer his last time up.
Braves manager Bobby Cox has also been suspended one game for the incident, although he met with Macha the next day and reportedly smoothed things over.
Asked about the meeting afterward, Macha said: “Bobby and I are friends. We talked about the situation. Bobby understands his side, and Bobby understands my side.”

Yet Riske hit Glaus after a warning on Sunday and wasn’t tossed and I’m betting he won’t be suspended or fined either.

And somewhere, Bob Gibson is shaking his head sadly…
In fairness to the Hall of Famer, Gibson didn’t hit batters as much as he pitched inside (so as to get them out with his slider away, you see.) When “sending a message”, Gibson would throw over the batter’s head! No suspensions, no beanballs, no problem…

That fat jackass shouldn’t stand there like an idiot admiring his homers in other teams ball parks maybe he wouldn’t get a fastball in the love handles.

Unbelievable! I wish there was some way for regular fans to address Bob Watson to “share our thoughts” about the job he’s doing.

    Good point!

As a brewers fan, this is dumb. I don’t even think Venters tried to hit Prince. The pitch that got the warning looked like it slipped, maybe it did maybe it didn’t. The ball that hit Prince was definitely a breaking ball. Four games for that is a joke.

I think the big reason this suspension was handled down was due to the fact that fielder got plunked the night or two before after Braun hit a HR. Then after being plunked again after he he hit his HR in the top of the 7th. He took it personally. If you zing one over Fielders head and the next one drills him. I think suspension was warrented. Pitches may not have great control all the time, but players in the bigs probably have more control then over the head and drilled in the back on consecutive pitches.
