Jamie Moyer may be done for the year . . . and forever

Jul 22, 2010, 6:25 PM EDT

Very bad news in Jamie Moyer land: An MRI Thursday revealed a sprain of the ulnar
collataral ligament and a strain of the pronator tendon.  I’m not sure what that means, but it sounds serious.

Moyer is going on the DL.  It’s an injury that could put him out for the year.  And at age 47, it’s an injury that could put him out for good.

Here’s hoping that’s not the case.

Craig, this made me laugh. I don’t know what a ulnar collataral ligament or a pronator tendon is but I will agree it sounds serious.

Well see, when you hear the words “ulnar collateral ligament” and “Dr. Andrews” in the same sentence, it’s very bad. Since that isn’t the case here, it’s just bad:

The pronator tendon is near to the UCL, and is used to rotate the arm.
It figures that with all the torque Moyer uses, even at reduced velocity, eventually he’d strain something in the elbow and forearm. And with his recovery time dependent on severity, DNA, and age, rest of the year is a good guess, but it could be less. It could also be more. Best of luck to him.

Here’s hoping it’s not the end of the road for Grampa. He’s a class act who has at times been the Phightins’ most consistent hurler–save for a few starts, he was even putting up Halladay-esque numbers. Get well soon, Fossil. We need you.

Who jinxed the old man with all that HOF talk?

    I knew Moyer wouldn’t last.

The ulnar collataral ligament is what’s replaced in Tommy John surgery, FYI.

Ulnar nerve is your “funny bone”…

Well, this pretty much means there’s no way for him to hit the 300 mark. Not that I expected him to do it actually, but now it seems even if he does bounce back, It’ll be even harder to reach.

Ulnar collateral ligament is what Nolan Ryan blew out to end his career. Also what Smoltz blew out before he came back as a closer.
