Not to demean the man or his career, but pretty much anyone could have won with those 1961-63 Yankees. Not only was the team loaded, but the weakest competative field in the AL was probably the weakest in decades (only the Tigers were a consistent threat, I believe). The NL was the much more dominant league in those years (due in no small part to the fact that NL teams were more open to using black players).
A classic “player’s manager” in the best sense.

I’m not old enough to remember him managing the Yankees, but I remember him from Detroit and Boston. A true stand-up, classy guy that said it like it was. RIP.
