The Cardinals aren't offering a ton for Oswalt

Jul 23, 2010, 3:13 PM EDT

We heard this morning that the Astros are asking for the moon for Roy Oswalt. I thought that was crazy, but it’s not much crazier than what the Cardinals are offering.  From Jayson Stark:

Heard from one source that the two major-league players St. Louis told Houston it would deal for Oswalt are John Jay and Brendan Ryan.

Jay is an interesting player if for no other reason than that he’s lit it up in limited play this season, but he is likely a fourth outfielder type at best based on what I’ve seen in various prospect reports over the past year or so (Cards fans can correct me if I’m way off here).  Ryan?  If he went to Houston it would be a benefit to the Cardinals, not a loss.

The talks are interesting, and of course, Roy Oswalt’s stated preference to go to the Cardinals matters, but really, if this is the current state of things between the Cards and the Astros, I have no idea how a deal gets done.

Oh come on, maybe the Phillies can top that with an offer of Kyle Kendrick, Reuben Amaro, Milt Thompson, Raul Ibanez, and Jamie Moyer.
Come on, this IS Ed Wade we’re talking about. He owes us.

To quote C. Montgomery Burns: “Excellent!”

If the Cardinals are paying all of Oswalt’s salary, that offer isn’t far off……you just can’t expect to get truly useful players and out from under a $16M/year salary of an aging pitcher.

Paper, Oswalt is 2 years younger than Tim Hudson and is NOT coming off surgery that forced him to miss a year and a half. Oswalt is better than Hudson when both are healthy as well. Why is it such a stretch to pay Oswalt $32 million for his 33rd and 34th years when the Braves are paying Huson $28 million for his 35th, 36th and 37th years? And regarding Oswalt’s “injury history” the guy has started 30 games for 7 straight years, so he really isn’t injury prone, is he? I think Oswalt is being SEVERELY underrated by alot of people.

Wouldn’t STL’s offer have to be much better than non-NL Central teams? I know it’s Ed Wade we’re talking about but it makes no sense he’d trade Oswalt to STL with 1+ years remaining. If Wade has any sense (he may not) he’ll offer Oswalt for Happ straight up. He may even be able to get one of the Phils A prospects too.

That’s interesting, but who are the prospects included in the deal? If it’s Shelby Miller to go along with Jay and Ryan, then that’s not a horrible deal for the Astros. For a team as bad as Houston whose farm system pretty much stinks, it’s all about the prospects at this point.

Hudson also wasn’t traded. Few teams will give up top-quality prospects/players AND take on a big contract.

Stark just tweeted: “Astros asking one big-leaguer, 2 high-end prospects & a second-tier prospect for Oswalt”
With those parameters, the Cardinals could offer Allen Craig (though I would prefer Ludwick to go), Shelby Miller, Eduardo Sanchez and Lance Lynn. But if the team is giving up talent like that, I would prefer it go for Haren.

The Phillies are trying to make moves to gain prospects to trade to Houston. Truthfully, with the history these two teams have of trading with eachother, I’d say they would have the inside track here above St Louis.

That is too much to give up for Oswalt, even is the Astros pick up 100% of his remaining salary….and the Cardinals would need the Astros to pick that up because they would have no impact players on the way that could cheaply supplement the high paid core.
Again. Oswalt is worth the money, but ONLY the money. Not the money and a high-end prospect like Miller.

Don’t forget about Eddie’s love for former Phils. Oh, and Lights Out’s promise to call Oswalt.
