The Rays are "kicking the tires" on Zack Greinke? OK, sure.

It’s crazy season, and when crazy season happens it actually helps for someone to throw a completely nuts rumor out there just to give us a nice break from actually thinking about deals. To make us laugh. To make us ponder the very ridiculousness of the trade deadline itself.  Here’s the leader in the clubhouse for the most off-the-wall thing thrown out there thus far:

Just
heard this: Rays “kicking the tires” of Royals pitcher Zach
Greinke…Would take a large ransom, but the Rays have pieces to do it

That’s from Tom Krasniqi of Bright House Sports Network down in Tampa. I guess how much credence you give that sort of thing has everything to do with what the definition of “kicking the tires” is.

Does that mean a couple of guys in the Rays’ front office said “man, it would be nice to have Greinke” while ordering their fourth beer at last night’s happy hour?  Does it mean people actually think it could happen? If I called the Art Institute of Chicago and asked them to give me Edward Hopper’s “Nighthawks” in exchange for my picture my son did, am I “kicking the tires on ‘Nighthawks.’” I really have no idea.

All I do know is that while the Royals may very well trade for Jeff Francoeur because they just can’t help themselves, even they aren’t dumb enough to trade Zack Greinke.

I would think if the Rays offered 2 major league ready prospects and a couple high-ceiling lower-level ones, the Royals would have to listen. Zack has had one great year, 2 good years, and a bunch of crap before that. Yeah, he was awesome last year, but in 2008 and this year, he’s looked pretty hittable. He’s 27 and will make $27 million the next two years and then he becomes a free agent. What makes him so untouchable?

Yeah, sure. 29 teams have kicked the tires on Greinke. But there’s no way in Hades that the Rays would take on his $27 million salary over the next two years. Not their MO.

The Rays will have to pry Francouer from the Mets first in order to get the Royals to seriously consider an offer.

the phrase “kick the tires” fills me with the urge to kick the tires of someone’s face.

I would be more impressed if Krasniqi could spell “Zack” correctly. Not much, but a bit. Not going to happen.

i follow the rays 24/7. absolutely no way they take on greinke’s salary, they have made public that next years payroll will DECREASE significantly, so they aren’t going to add 27 million over 2 years. we could give re-signing crawford a run if we have that money laying around.
i feel if anything they will be looking for a type A rental player who will give them 2 first rounders back after free agency.
keep this in mind. If the rays get their own first rounder, two first rounders for crawford, possibly two for pena, and possibly two more for a rental player, they could afford to give away a prospect. not sure if i am right on the number of all those first rounders, but still….i wouldn’t give away jennings or hellickson right now, but anyone else is on the table
