The Dodgers are pushing hard to land Scott Podsednik

Jul 28, 2010, 4:30 PM EDT

Scott Podsednik is not the stuff that dreams are made of, but (a) he’s pretty cheap; and (b) the Dodgers are staring down the barrel of “Garret Anderson: starting left fielder” if they don’t get someone to replace Manny Ramirez, so I guess it’s kind of understandable that L.A. is pushing hard to get Podsednik from the Royals.

Podsednik is hitting .309/.352/.400.  That’s not ideal from a power perspective from your left fielder, but he only costs about $500K for the rest of the reason and can play some centerfield.  Not someone you build around when you have better options, but right now the Dodgers don’t have better options.

The problem for Dodgers fans here is that when Ned Colletti starts feeling panicky, he does crazy things…like trade Carlos Santana for Casey Blake. Think Dayton Moore can convince Colletti that Dee Gordon belongs in the same organization that gave his daddy his start, just for nostalgia’s sake?

Hind sight is always 20/20 but I still like the Santant for Blake trade. One must remember that Russell Martin was coming off a gold glove & silver slugger 2007 with only modest reduction in 2008. Blake helped to change the attitude of the team as he was veteran who unlike Jeff Kent could speak to the young players and help to bring out more. Don’t get me wrong, I wish Blake could do more with the bat than he has shown through much of this season but I still view him as a strong and positive influence on the team. If Podsednik can be had for a decent but not great prospect (i.e. not Dee Gordon) the Dodgers should pull the trigger as I’ll agree that such a trade would be crazy.

At the time the trade was pretty thoroughly panned, and you can’t justify it in retrospect by bringing up Blake’s veteran-y goodness in the clubhouse. Not for that kind of overpayment.

Dayton Moore will find away to give away our players for little to nothing. Dodger fans won’t have to worry about losing Gordon.
