The Rangers and Marlins are getting closer on a deal for Jorge Cantu. Talks were going on yesterday, but Jayson Stark
reported that the Rangers wanted Florida to pick up most of Cantu’s remaining salary. Today USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports that the Marlins will do just that.
Cantu started the season with a bunch of RBIs and some big hits, but he now sits at .259/.308/.408. The Rangers want some depth on the corners, however, and he just does that. If he comes basically free, sure, take him, but he’s not going to alter the balance of power in Alpha Quadrant or anything.

Texas is going to have to give up a couple of pretty good prospects if the Marlins are going to eat the salary.

OK, J.D., that’s enough now. Don’t go giving away the farm (system) for the sake of overkill. What we have on the field now is a certain contender with the legs to go running into November. The time has come to start thinking into 2011 and beyond. Once you deplete the best farm system in baseball, you no longer HAVE the best farm system in baseball….

It’s hard to believe that balls hit down the third base line from now on might really wind up in the mitt of a Feesh first baseman instead of in the third or fourth row of field boxes about ten feet to his right. When Jorge was “on,” he could carry the team. When he wasn’t, his fielding would give back everything he won with his bat. The last month or so, he has been absolutely brutal in the field. But I wish him all the best as a designatedhitterball player.

I believe he’ll be at first, as he’s a pretty good sized improvement over Chris Davis at the plate. There’s no way he’d replace Vlad Guerrero (who’s SMOKIN’) at DH, except for the occasional day of…
