The Jays probably aren't moving Jose Bautista

Jul 31, 2010, 10:41 AM EDT

Buster Oleny offers one of his famous “heard this” tweets to the effect of the Blue Jays not really being interested in moving Jose Bautista.  The thinking is that he’s killing it, Blue Jays fans are getting into it, and he’s likely only to get an arbitration award in the $6 million range, so why not keep him?

I’ve been going back and forth on whether I’d trade Bautista if I was running the Jays, but keeping him is probably the right call.  If he’s really found a new level of performance he can anchor the Jays’ lineup for a couple of years. If this is a fluke year, well, it’s not a ton of money to commit to the guy next season.

Still, if Brian Sabean or someone calls and blows them away . . .

Bautista is hitting above his career batting average, but it’s not a result of a flukey baBIP, which is almost 30 bps lower than his career mark. He has the same LD%. The lower BaBIP looks to be driven by a higher % of infield fly balls as a percentage of total fly balls, but this, what I’ll call, agressive hitting style has yielded a 20% HR/FB rate, well above his 11% career average. He’s striking out less and walking more…he might have turned the corner. Who’s the Jay’s hitting coach?

Dwayne Murphy is the Blue Jays hitting coach. He has worked extensively with Bautista and has certainly changed his batting stance. You are right about the increase in walks. Bautista’s plate discipline has improved. His confidence level is very high. When he came up yesterday with the bases loaded, the grand slam was almost inevitable. Yesterday he had 3 hits and two walks.
Bautista is a late bloomer rather than a guy having a career year.
