Brandon Inge ahead of schedule and cleared for rehab stint

Aug 3, 2010, 2:49 PM EST

Brandon Inge was initially expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a broken hand suffered on July 19, but now he’s been cleared to begin a minor-league rehab assignment tonight at Single-A.
There’s no word yet on an official revised return timetable, but he’s clearly ahead of schedule and by rule rehab assignment are limited to 20 days. Inge is hoping to be back in the lineup at some point next week.
Jhonny Peralta has been filling in at third base since the Tigers acquired him from the Indians last week, but could shift to shortstop once Inge is healthy. Peralta started 38 games at shortstop last season and has logged more than 6,000 career innings there, although his defense was criticized for about 5,999 of those frames.
Another option would be shifting Peralta to second base, where rookie Will Rhymes has been filling in for an injured Carlos Guillen, but Peralta has never played the position in the majors or minors and Guillen isn’t expected to be sidelined for much longer.
