If Bond’s is still in the running for any type of notoriety for his homerun success, then A-Rod should still get his props for whatever his final numbers turn out to be. And at least A-Rod fessed-up…albeit only after being pressured to come forward. Bond’s is still in a state of denial. There isn’t an honest sole alive who doesn’t know he juiced.

@Relic….O lets compare
1. During the “Babe” era, pitchers average speed was 75 mph, and also had an average of 3 different types of pitches. In the ARod era pitchers average mph is 92 and each pitcher averages 5 different types of pitches.
2. The difference of distance between the home plate and centerfield is 132ft making it alot easier to hit homeruns in the earlier days.
3. They did not have drug testing in the “Babe” era, now there are over 200 different types of suppliments that are banned by the mlb, so you are telling me that in the earlier years of baseball, athletes didnt take ANYTHING to help their game????

One of the hardest things in sports is to hit a round ball with a round bat ..You can’t take the ability away from A-Rod…the only thing you can say..a lot of these would not have made it over the fence!!!

* Confused actually. I dont know how to put his achievement in perspective. On the one hand he cheated, on other seems quite a few pitchers did too, and just to mix it all up the ball parks shrank and he got a few years of feasting on diluted pitching from the expansion teams.

Forfeit home runs? How can you “forfeit” history? These home runs did happen. You can’t make them not happen–they did. And your mention of Griffey draws out another point: How do we know who did and did not use? There is no way to tell, there wasn’t testing ten years ago. The players who have been outed are just a small fraction of those who used.

It’s sad that these milestones in sports are being achieved by people who have cheated to get there. I don’t think Barry Bonds’ record should stand, neither should Alex’s or Sosa’s marks. The other 4 on that list all did it honestly. Griffey played in the doping era, yet he managed to make that list without any PED’s. I feel if you have cheated in the game, as Rodriguez, Sosa, McGuire, Bonds, and any other player has, you shouldn’t be added to any list of lifetime achievements. I think you should have to forfeit any and all home runs stemming from the period in which the person was using the drug. And even after that, still not let them have their names associated with greatness.

So many generalizations. For one thing, how do you qualify “interest in the fans”? Rodriguez is active in the community and also makes large contributions to charity. For another, I’m not sure how you came to the conclusion that Rodriguez “couldn’t care less about his team or his teammates.” He’s not the most popular guy in baseball, but to say that he doesn’t care about his team is a huge leap of speculation. There’s no way to quantify caring.
Does he have a complex? Sure. Does he care too much about how he is perceived? Probably, yeah. Is he actually a bad guy? I doubt this very much. He has made some poor choices, and he’s screwed up in the past, but that doesn’t make him a piece of garbage. It just makes him a flawed human being, like all of us. And if he has a sense of entitlement, so what? I’m not going to hold it against him. A lot of guys have a sense of entitlement.

This guy is the best example of what is the worst in baseball. Wont ride or eat with the team, no interest in the fans other than their $, is A-roid’d up, couldnt care less about his team or his teammates, is generally a piece of dump. he doesnt deserve to have his name up against true heroes of the game.

He may be chronologically younger than the Babe, but consider the following:
1. The Babe was a pitcher at the beginning of his career and haqd less at bats.
2. The Babe played a lesser number of games in each season.
3. The Babe didn’t use roids.

@Trevor B, Congratulations, your diatribe is the dumbest I’ve read today. If you are in favor of keeping arrogance out of the Hall of Fame back up the truck there is a tremendous number of people we have to remove. If you watch baseball and are a true fan of the game then you must freely admit that there are more headcases in the game than just A-Rod. Some of the names that come to mind are the names of great players Pete Rose, Ty Cobb, Rickey Henderson, Goose Gossage, Ted Williams, Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and on and on and on. You don’t have to like A-Rod but if you are going to slam him for arrogance then you better be ready to slam all the others as well. Most Pro athletes are arrogant and self rightoues and have an over blown sense of self entitlement that is the nature of most athletes. Your blinded worship of Mark McGwire is naive, he appeared before Congress and did not tell the truth. He told them he was not there to talk about the past, what a load of crap! The truth of the matter is McGwire most likely would have never admitted to using steroids had LaRussa not offered him the hitting coach job and a chance to return to the dugout. A-Rod was sold out by someone who is in posession of a list of participants and results that were supposed to be confidential and sold his name most likely for monetary gain. When the story broke A-Rod apologized for his indiscretions and said nothing about not being there to talk about the past, in other words he took his medicine. Now, A-Rod is going to have to live with the consequences of his actions and so will all the other players who were caught up in the “Steroid Era”, but you are wrong to say and imply that A-Rod is a worse offender just because you don’t like him as a player. The truth of the matter is that they don’t elect players to the Hall based on their “image” it is about the stats and their ability to play the game. Most baseball purists will even tell you that Pete Roses’ crimes against the game are worse than using Steroids, drugs or anything else because what he did brings back the memories of the “Black Sox” scandal and most baseball people see gambling on the game as the Cardinal Sin. So the next time you decide to get on your “soapbox” and slam A-Rod remember he made a mistake, apologized to the baseball community and his teammates for the mistake and made no bones about it, why don’t you ask Bonds, Palmeiro and Ortiz and Ramirez to do the same?, yea it won’t happen.

Color has everything to do with this topic. We’re talking about the advantages and disadvantages of playing in this era vs that era etc.. A major advantage for Ruth was that he did not have to face the great talent pool of black pitchers. He also didn’t have to travel to the west coast. He also didn’t play in night games for a large part of his career (I believe).

I don’t WISH it. I KNOW he’s not on the same level as those three.
Also, I couldn’t answer cause you had 4 choices of which I thought neither was correct.
Where was the 5th choice of: Disgusted! Steroids? Don’t believe Ruth, Aaron and Mays hit their homeruns on steroids therefore A-Fraud had an unfair (and illegal) advantage. Don’t count ANY of his homeruns.
