Wow, so this Carlos Delgado thing might actually happen

Aug 5, 2010, 9:12 AM EDT

I made all kinds of fun of Carlos Delgado’s agent sending his video around to teams the other day, but it looks like I’m the idiot now, because Ken Rosenthal says that the White Sox are showing interest.

He notes multiple other times are good fits, but it’s not clear that they’re actually interested like Chicago is.  Still, the fact that even one team is toying with the notion of signing Delgado means that the dude must have worked pretty darn hard in his rehab and conditioning this summer, and for that he deserves some praise, even if he doesn’t end up signing somewhere.

Meanwhile, Jermaine Dye would like you to know that he eagled the 16th hole yesterday and then had a most satisfying club sandwich, followed by a nap.

Years ago, Mike Royko used to write about “the ex-Cubs factor”. It was kind of a Kevin Bacon type thingy basically getting to the point that anyone who played in the Friendly Confines was forever doomed.
Since that has faded from memory we may be able to weave some “ex-Met” mythology to soothe Twins and Tigers fans. Go for it, Ozzie and Kenny.

I said this in a comment yesterday: If you’re an AL team, why not sign him to a minor league deal now, and have him play for a couple weeks straight. Then if he rakes, call him up on 8/31 and you have an extra bat for the stretch run and playoffs. No-lose situation, you’re not going to have to pay much to get him, and if he’s a disaster, you release him.

Makes sense for the Phils, exactly for the reasons you stated, and if Howard’s injury lags, he can fill in at first. Minor league contract with big league playing time incentives. It’s all upside.

This is exactly what the White Sox should be doing after missing out on Dunn, Berkman, etc. Seriously, Delgado can’t be worse than Kotsay, can he? Any upgrade would be huge. Sign him to a minor league deal, and if he rakes, he’s called up and DHs.
