Cardinals’ third baseman David Freese is out for the rest of the season due to an ankle injury, so St. Louis would like some infield help. A possible target: Andy LaRoche. That according to Rob Biertempfer of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
I know LaRoche’s stock has fallen quite a bit since his days as a prospect, but I’d have a hard time seeing him clear waivers. He’s still cheap and is a year removed from a season that, while nothing spectacular, shows that he could probably be a serviceable infielder for a non-contender (i.e. every team who has waiver claim priority over the Cardinals).

Not sure I buy that logic. If any team wanted LaRoche, I’m sure they could have gotten him at any point – especially once Alvarez was promoted. He doesn’t seem to be part of the rebuilding core in Pittsburgh. I can’t imagine it would take much more than a bucket of balls and a folding chair to get him.

Not sure I but that reasoning. If any team wanted LaRoche, they could have gotten him pretty easily, particularly once Alvarez was promoted. He doesn’t seem to be part of the Pirates’ future. I can’t imagine it would take much more than a bucket of balls and a folding chair to get him. Having said that, I hope the Cards to pick him up. If nothing else, it might help get Aaron Miles off the roster.
