The Reds and Dusty Baker are talking about a contract extension

Aug 6, 2010, 4:50 PM EDT

We heard that they’d be discussing it after the deadline. It’s now after the deadline. They’re now discussing it, with Baker telling MLB.com that he’s “been approached in the last couple days,” and that “there are some things starting.”

As was the case with Ron Washington, it’s all about winning. If the Reds weren’t in it this year I suspect that there would have been a 98.9% chance that Baker would be gone, if for no other reason than he makes a lot of money for a manager, and the Reds tend not to like paying a lot of money to their managers.  But when you’re in the playoff hunt all year as the Reds have been, that changes things.

With a rotation that could Leake, Wood and Chapman next year the Reds would be crazy NOT to bring back Dusty. What could possibly go wrong?
