$3 million for two years for a once well regarded Japanese pitcher doesn’t seem all that outlandish. Two terrible outings and injuries aside, he’s been a standard reliever.

Is it really a money crunch? That remains the big question. Gotta say, if there is any truth at all to the oft-denied Madoff rumors, then there is a real problem and one that isn’t entirely the team’s fault (though the Castillo and Perez contracts can’t be blamed on anyone else). And it’s also possible that every team that doesn’t play in the Bronx is in a bad way thanks to the Great Recession. Remember, in 2008 a new network and a new stadium looked like sure money makers to almost everyone.
But we’re still left wondering what the truth is. A little transparency would be nice. And also unprecedented.
On the bright side, this is the chance for the Mets to get younger and imitate the method used by Tampa Bay. The farm system isn’t amazing, but it’s a lot better now and I for one want to see the prospects get their chance.
The biggest problem here is that just like the Mets are loathe to cut Awful Ollie and get nothing back, they might be stuck with Omar and his contract.
