Who is the worst everyday player in baseball?

Aug 9, 2010, 2:39 PM EDT

Edmonds trade aside, it’s a pretty slow day in baseball land, so I offer up a link to Joe Posnanski’s post in which he tries to figure out who the worst position player in baseball is this year.  He goes over a long list of candidates, discussing their lack of merits, but he settles on Carlos Lee.

Harumph. Apparently Mr. Posnanski didn’t notice that Lee has played some first base recently, which must be raising his WARs and VORPs and FARKs and FUBARs way above a bunch of other guys. He also apparently hasn’t noticed that Lee is not Alex Rodriguez, and thus isn’t history’s greatest monster.

But for that it’s a fabulous list.

Putting aside that Frenchy and Castillo are now on the bench, I would say that this year, Castillo has been worse than Francouer. The latter was at least reliable in the field and had a few good moments at the plate. Castillo seems to have not had any of that, either, when healthy.

Ok, My first question is … WHY? Why point out the sports worst player? Only in baseball…

No stuffing the ballot box for Jeff Franceour, Craig….
    Here are a few candidates:
    Kevin Cash
    Ryan Rowland-Smith
Manny Delcarmen (never seen a straighter fastball)
    Chad Qualls
    Corey Sullivan
Oliver Perez (I had to throw at least one Met in there)
    Akinori Iwamura
    Honorable Mention: Joba Chamberlain

Honorable mention? I guess you consider the oil exploration and extracation of BP a resounding success.

You know what? Most every guy, heck every single guy on that list is better than me, and better than probably anyone else reading this fun little workday distraction, and better than anyone else writing about the worst everyday player. :-)

BTW, I love to see JoePo’s reference to Franceour as “Frankie”. Is he really called that west of the Mississippi? Is that a Hellman’s kind of thing? Or his alias if the trade to KC went through?

    One step furthur….
Who is the worst pitcher to ever pitch a perfect game(Or ‘no hitter’ for that matter)
It would(almost) have to be Galarraga???

Until traded to the Tigers, this honor would have to go to Jhonny Peralta, but my vote is Travis Hafner.

IMO it is the Pirates, the entire team, coaches (old and new), manager, FO, owner, and, yes, the poor guys that sell beer at PNC park. Oh wait, you were talking about MAJOR league baseball players. My bad!

Why don’t we figure who the worst sports writer is on the subject of baseball? My thoughts are Craig Calcaterra! What an awful reporter. Instead of reporting what is happening we are subject to his stupidity and ignorance. Who would you vote for?

Galarraga isn’t done yet though. How about Juan Nieves?

I don’t know if Lee is the worse but he is certainly one of the fattest. How can some of these “professional athletes” have the nerve to expect to perform at a high level when they are so obese? Let’s have a list of baseball’s most out-of-shape players.

Jose Reyes or Big Papi have to be the worse in MLB, Hands down!
