If not New York, where would Derek Jeter sign?

Aug 12, 2010, 2:33 PM EDT

Look, I know he’s not leaving the Yankees and you know he’s not leaving the Yankees, but if I don’t link to MLBTR’s fun post about possible non-Yankees destinations for Derek Jeter, then I’m just going to post another thing about the Mets, and frankly, even I’m getting tired of that. So where — apart from the Bronx — would Jeter make the most sense?

Of all of the viable options in the piece I suppose he’d look the least out of place in a Cardinals uniform simply because it’s a classic thing, they’re a winning team and there’s a manager there who actually matches Jeter in terms of power and prestige and all of that. Maybe the Tigers.  Even those two would be crazy, though. I can’t think of a player in modern memory who would look more out of place on another team than Jeter.

Which means that, while this exercise is a silly one, it’s one that illustrates just how little negotiating room Jeter and the Yankees really have this winter.

Can’t imagine Chipper in another uniform, but looks like that won’t be an issue anyway.

I could see Jeter wearing a Dodger’s uniform if he wasn’t wearing a Yankees, but then again the Astros enjoy signing older guys.

How about Gotham City or Duckburg? If we’re going to fantasize, might as well go all the way.
Funny thing is that if you took his current stats and age in a vacuum, you wouldn’t really have the sort of shortstop most teams would offer top money for (especially if you accept the argument JoPo raised the other day that Jeter is actually a bad defensive shortstop). So even taking away the well-deserved love affair between the captain and the Yankees, he probably wouldn’t get a better offer anyplace else.
Unless the Red Sox give him huge huge bucks just to mess with the Yankees.

If Torre is still with the Dodgers, it’s almost plausible.

I think the Miami Heat could use a shortstop.

Guys you can’t imagine elsewhere for me include George Brett and the Royals and Barry Larkin and the Reds. Cal Ripken and the Orioles, too. The little kid in my wants to say Kirby Puckett and the Twins, but he flirted with going to the Red Sox at one point.

Couldn’t see Cal Ripken Jr. play anywhere else.

How about Otisburg? Recall the following:
Lex Luthor: Bye-bye, California. Hello, new west coast. My west coast.
Costa Del Lex. Luthorville. Marina del Lex. Otisburg… Otisburg?
Otis: Miss Teschmacher, she’s got her own place.
    Lex Luthor: Otisburg????
Otis: It’s a little bitty place.
    Lex Luthor: OTISBURG????!?!?!?!!?
Otis: Okay, I’ll just wipe it off, that’s all. Just a little town.

Let him go to Pirates, Orioles or K.C. and see what he does!

This is the greatest comment ever.

It’d never happen but if the Red Sox got him it’d be epic!
the Boss would turn over in his grave.

    Didn’t Amos Otis play there?

  13. BC - Aug 12, 2010 at 4:18 PM

    Which one?

It will one day tear my heart out if Utley wears anything but red pinstripes.

    Jeter as a Met?

  16. James - Aug 12, 2010 at 4:47 PM

This just in: LeBron James offers to pay Derek Jeter’s entire salary if he goes to play for the Red Sox just to take the heat off himself.

If he ever leaves, Rube–or whoever the moron is that let him go anywhere–would be tarred, feathered, tased, and drawn and quartered. And THEN the pain would begin.

He would never go to the Sox and besides, they would never offer a mediocre shortstop big bucks. They are way too smart with shortstops!
