The killer of it is he has a habit of blowing two and three run lead save opportunities. Not the 1 run. Example being against New York, one run lead, he faced 4 batters (of course Jeter had a 13 pitch at bat 11 of the pitches were strikes/foul balls but he still managed to walk because umpires won’t call a strike on him at Yankee stadium). Velocity is not there, ERA, opponent batting average, opponent OPS is not there. Doesn’t help the whold bullpen with the exception of Bard is consistently incosistent.

I keep forgetting how many baseball fans dislike either the Red Sox or Papelbon. Still as a Jays fan the story was the great 9th inning comeback. The Jays got the lumber out against all three Boston pitchers. Papelbon should not be given 100% of the credit. Some credit should also go to Salty. A good throw might have caught Wise at second base. Wise did not have a good jump, but Salty bounced his throw to second.

Craig Calcaterra is excellent, and rightly focuses on Boston’s closer because he is supposed to preserve, rather than lose, the lead. When Boston loses, their own fans give them hell than Craig ever will. Hey, Mariano Rivera blew the game for New York the other night. Nobody’s perfect!

I have to say, as a Sox fan, I am getting seriously fed up with Papelbon’s “badass closer” persona thing he does on the mound. With all the pacing around and the long stare-in and the pucker-face BS, it takes the guy like half an hour to record three outs. I could tolerate that when he was dominating everybody, but for a guy who’s the second best reliever on his own team? It’s not a good look.

Much as I enjoyed the moment, big picture-wise it’s worth remembering that the Red Sox have just gone through New York and Toronto without their best player and won four of seven. I’ll say it again: They’re not going away.
But yes, the world is a happier place every time Assface blows a save.

Thanks for the 411 , I thought that was a term of endearment from the Yankee fans . With Bard in the fold , Papelbum should start looking elsewhere for employment next year . I don’t think he should think about New York though , unless it’s the Mets .

It seems like a bigger deal when Paps blows a save because it’s absolutely more hilarious than when anybody else does.
And yes, he does lead the AL in blown saves now.

Wait, I think Papelbon actually does now lead the American League in blown saves. That’s number 6, nudging him out of a tie with Brandon League. A couple of guys in the NL have him beat, but still . . . not what you want to see out of your superstar closer.
