Joe Maddon received his honorary “doctor of letters” degree from Lafayette College yesterday, meaning the Rays’ manager is officially now a doctor.
Mark Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times notes that approximately 200 people attended the ceremony at the college Maddon dropped out of 35 years ago. Or as he joked: “I was on the 38-year-old plan.”
Best of all he wore one of those ridiculous-looking “BRaysers” that the Rays have been sporting lately, although unfortunately he’d changed back into a less hilarious jacket by the time that photo was snapped.

Lafayette’s a good school but a “Doctor of Letters?” Hell, I know how to say, A, B, C, D….is that all it takes?

Alumunus here. Lafayette College doesn’t offer any post-graduate programs, so that must be the best they could come up with… pretty weak, I agree.

These honorary doctorate degrees do nothing but water down what it takes to actually get one. The right way. What is a doctorate of letters? Ok Wiki says in the US it’s a bunch of BS. In other countries you have to work for it. “awarded to candidates whose record of published work and research shows conspicuous ability and originality and constitutes a distinguished and sustained achievement. University committee and board approval is required, and candidates must provide documented mastery of a particular area or field.”

Joe Maddon really looks like Gene Hackman in Enemy of the State.

Oh, whatever. Let the guy have his fake degree. No one takes those things seriously.
