Ryne Sandberg named PCL manager of the year

Sep 3, 2010, 10:30 AM EDT

Here’s one for the resume as the Cubs look for a new big league manager:

Ryne Sandberg will be named Pacific Coast League manager of the year today, the Iowa Cubs confirmed Thursday. In
Sandberg’s first season as Cubs manager, the team was a season-high 21
games over .500 entering Thursday’s contest at Albuquerque.

The article notes that Sandberg’s success has come “despite the fact
that there have been 107 player transactions” and eight
Iowa-to-Chicago callups for guys making their big league debut.  This kind of screams for context, though, because that’s pretty much life for an AAA manager. It wouldn’t shock me at all if several other PCL managers had to deal with that stuff.

Still, the award is another thing that’s going to make it harder for the Cubs as they choose their new manager. Not because it makes Sandberg an objectively better candidate or something, but because now, if the Cubs choose someone else for the job, every Chicago reporter who wants to take issue it will be able to add “2010 Manager of the Year” before the phrase “Ryne Sandeberg was passed over . . .”

If he doesn’t get the job now, the big question is will he ever? And if not, maybe he should make like Mattingly and get out of the organization and go somewhere else.

That’s not an if / should. If he doesn’t get the job, I guarantee you he will leave the org and try to find a job somewhere else, probably as a bench coach or base coach. If I was him, I would do the exact same thing. He did EXACTLY what they wanted, going down the minors, learning the ropes, the players, how to evaluate and whatnot. If he didn’t get the position there, there is no reason to stay.

too bad the cubs and redbirds will split their four game series this week and the o royals will sweep OKC forcing a three way tie atop the division and the royals will make the playoffs over the redbirds and sandbergs cubs.. and sandberg wont get the chicago cubs job because management will realize it doesnt matter what level of baseball, they choke.. rosenblatte gets a couple more games and the place fills up like last night when everyone was expecting the last game to be played at rosenblatte.
on another note its too bad it takes tearing down rosenblatte to get people in the seats
