The Rockies call up Jay Payton

Sep 7, 2010, 12:32 PM EDT

Hell, they’ve already got Melvin Mora on the team, so why not call up Jay Payton?

For
Payton, 37, who has spent parts of 13 seasons in the major leagues,
this season has been about making peace with himself and the game after
injuries forced him to miss the 2009 season.

“It’s a good feeling, to get back after all the hard work you’ve
put in, surgeries and stuff,” Payton said. “To get back to the big
leagues, put on a big-league uniform again, it’s something special.”

Payton hit hit .323 with six homers, 74 RBI and 13 stolen bases for Colorado Springs this year. He’ll provide some depth.

No word if Preston Wilson got a contract too.

Insert over the hill, ex-Oriole. Sidney Ponson’s without a team…

    Where is Desi Relaford?

I think you need to start doing a “where are they now” weekly entry. It would be great. Feature only well-known, yet strangely obscure players like Payton.

    Floyd Rayford?

Jay Payton will always be locked in my memeory banks for a very strange reason. Back in the early 00’s, me and a few of my buddies did a road trip to Chicago to catch some Cubbies and Sox games. While at Wrigley, the Cubs were playing the Mets and we were amonst the sweating mass of humanity that is the bleacher seats. A few rows in front of us sat some very loud and entertaining Mets fans straight from NY. Payton, playing for the Mets at the time, drew some ire from one of these fans in particular, but not for his play on the field, but because of his supposed lack of lawn maintenance abilities. This is what we heard everytime Payton took his position in LF; (to the stands) “Payton’s a bum, guy never cuts his lawn.” and (to Payton); “Hey Payton! Cut yo’ Damn Lawn!” The trip was great, but this guy made it even better.

You really shouldn’t be mean to Orioles fans. There are only like 15 of us.
