MLB attendance will be down this year

Sep 9, 2010, 10:31 AM EDT

Recent baseball attendance is still on a plateau above where it was just a few short years ago, but it is trending down ever so slightly. Around 1% off of last year’s pace, it appears. Maury has the detailed numbers over at Biz of Baseball this morning. Definitely worth checking out.

The biggest decliner this year: the Mets, who are more than 6000 off of 2009′s pace. The biggest gainer: the Twins, by over 11,000. Neither team or figure is really all that surprising. A little more surprising: the White Sox and Rays are both off last year’s pace despite rebounding on the field. I know attendance often lags team quality by a year, but you’d think they would have at least held steady. Also surprising: the Pirates are drawing better than they did last year.

Not in Philly. Every game has been sold out. In fact, the day game of the double header the other day was the highest attendance of the year.

Can’t we do anything right in Oakland? It seems we only dropped 81 fans per game this year from 2009, to finish second from the bottom in average attendance. Cleveland defeated us, despite their now 20 year old stadium, which is brand new compared to the Mausoleum. And our next nearest neighbor, the Feesh, have a spiffy new stadium to look forward to, so they will soon zoom away from us.
Still, it would be neat to see how that attendance chart matches up to team profit. Hello, revenue sharing. We make a tidy sum here in Oakland, as do the Pirates and the Feesh. But I’m sure we’d finish second again, to his Majesty King Peter Angelos, who has perfected the art of having it all: fabulous (empty) stadium, big revenue tv network, cash from his nearest rival (the Nats), tiny payroll, et voila, big profits.
    What’s that about winning?

That’s a really cool antique turnstile there. I’d love to add it to my antique collection of “crap” as my wife calls it.

We always have to remember that this is tickets sold not butts in the seats. Lots of people are simply not showing up to save some dough.
