How Ozzie Guillen gets to Florida

Sep 22, 2010, 9:38 AM EDT

We’ve been tracking the notion of Ozzie Guillen getting out of his White Sox contract to the Florida Marlins for some time now.  Ken Rosenthal has too, and this morning he’s reporting that Ozzie has a plan to do so:  He’ll ask the White Sox for a contract extension beyond 2011 (when his current deal expires) and if and when the White Sox balk, he’ll ask to be released and be allowed to take the Marlins gig:

Guillen wants assurances that the White Sox would like him to remain
manager long-term, according to a source with knowledge of his thinking.

The source even outlined a scenario that could lead to Guillen’s departure from the club:

• Guillen asks for a contract extension, one that goes beyond the team simply exercising his club option for 2012.

• The White Sox balk, and Guillen asks owner Jerry Reinsdorf to allow him to pursue the Marlins’ opening.

It’s genius, really, as is Ozzie getting out in front of this thing with some choice quotes Rosenthal runs in his article. The “I want them to extend me because they want me to stay, not because I’m Ozzie” thing is clever in that it (a) signals his intentions; while (b) signaling to Reinsdorf and Kenny Williams that if they let him go, he won’t spin it as some kind of personal slight or anything. That could help defuse the controversy.

We all like to have a laugh at how politically incorrect Ozzie Guillen can be, but really, the guy is a master of politics. He wouldn’t have survived so long in this game if he wasn’t.

I agree about Ozzie, but in this case, wouldn’t his agent have something to do with it as well? Or maybe he doesn’t even have an agent, which would make him a genius!!!

Unless of course it was his agent that told him what to say. I’d sooner believe that. His Tweeting is just too much to ignore. The evidence is in. Ozzie is smart when it comes to the game, but when it comes to what he says? proper, or PC? not so much.

I don’t understand why he want to leave a situation in Chicago where they spend money on players and try to win every year to go to Florida where the ownership only cares about lining their own pockets. Florida does not sound like a better job to me. Though the entertainment value of listening to Ozzie gripe about the lack of players would be fun for the rest of us.

Ozzie Guillen going to the Feesh would be the best thing this blog could possibly hope for. Assuming Old Gator doesn’t croak upon hearing the news, the daily I-have-to-Google-what-he-just-said comments would be pure gold.

I firmly believe that Craig is doing this to me in order to avenge some imagined slight. And I’ve gone out of my way to avoid bruising his delicate sensibilities about the Braves, too. One too many lawyer jokes, maybe. Maybe the one about the laboratory rats put him over the edge.
However, if I need to cheer myself up a little, I envision the pre-hire interview:
El Chihuahua: Ozzie, you do understand that you’ll be working with the lowest payroll in baseball, and that you can stand on your head and piss on the ceiling but you won’t get Jim Thome back, right?
Ozzie: hey man that okay by me, you know? Maybe instead we use three or four you scrapheap reclamation proyecktoes for deseegnated heeter?
Scrooge McLoria: Tell you what. I’ll give you one and, just maybe, two scrapheap reclamation projects for designated hitter. But their salaries start coming off of yours for every day we’re not leading the division. How’s that?
Ozzie: I teenk we gots us a deal here, baybay!

Dr. Frankenstein himself couldn’t make him a genius, even if Igor didn’t come back from the graveyard with Abbie Normal’s brain.
