Rays to give away 20,000 free tickets to tomorrow's game

Sep 28, 2010, 5:19 PM EDT

No doubt in response to David Price calling out fans for not showing up to last night’s game and the subsequent criticism he’s received, the Rays announced that they’re giving away 20,000 free tickets to tomorrow night’s game.
All the details haven’t been released yet, but Mark Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times reports that the free tickets will be available at Tropicana Field starting at 4:45 p.m.

That is soooo awesome. This should be done MLB-wide. Why not fill seats and make $$ on concessions? Every team should take this example. Talk about an awesome way to instill pride and energy into the fan base.

New markets ought to prove there is enough of a fan base to sustain a team. Another team I feel sorry for is the Marlins. Their park is like a tomb.
YOu can blame the park, the economy or whatever. Tampa doesn’t deserve the Rays.

Except that many teams SELL the tickets AND make money on concesssions. This is not a good idea. What about the people that already bought tickets to this game? Will they get their money back?

  4. Cheap Seat Chronicles - Sep 28, 2010 at 5:42 PM

The fact that a legit World Series contending team–that is currently challenging for the best record in baseball–actually has 20,000 seats left to give away in the final week of the season is downright ridiculous.

Oh Yeah. That will solve it… forced appreciation.

  6. Glenn - Sep 28, 2010 at 5:46 PM

If I was a paying costumer, I would be hesitant to pay again. Our local minor league team did a dollar ticket night every Monday. Soon, that was the only day that people went and attendance went down overall. Giving away tickets is short term smart but long term foolish.

  7. Mr. Heyward - Sep 28, 2010 at 5:47 PM

nah, only for unsold tix, man. of course you can’t resell tickets already sold. that is something Wrigley doesn’t have to worry about…but most parks could do something like this at this time of year when there’s no playoff chances and/or ticket sales dwindle…for the rays, they cold give them away all year apparently.

  8. Mr. Heyward - Sep 28, 2010 at 5:48 PM

make it temporary and make it sporadic so fans don’t know when they will be given away…this idea is brilliant and should be replicated.

  9. Old Gator - Sep 28, 2010 at 5:49 PM

And I hear that tonight they’re also adding two lanes in each direction to all four of those long and annoying bridges.

  10. Mr. Heyward - Sep 28, 2010 at 5:51 PM

see every post from earlier today.

It’s a very nice one time gesture by the Rays organization, very unlike the skyward gesture Price and Longoria effectively gave their entire fan base.

  12. Old Gator - Sep 28, 2010 at 6:31 PM

I can just imagine how Scrooge McLoria and the Chihuahua would handle this kind of Tennis Court Oath public relations gambit: they’d announce the giveaway, then cover one of the outfield sections with a vinyl tarp with thousands of images of fans preprinted on it.

THE BEATINGS WILL CONTINUE UNTIL MORALE IMPROVES!

  14. Ditto65 - Sep 28, 2010 at 8:40 PM

I would be more worried about Scrooge McLoria going all “Reign of Terror” on the freeloaders.

Ten bucks says that even with the 20,000 free tickets they still draw only 15,000.

  16. Old Gator - Sep 28, 2010 at 10:05 PM

Show them his head. It will be worth it.
    .
Well, actually, it’ll probably be overpriced….

  17. ribbie149 - Sep 28, 2010 at 10:26 PM

Ten bucks says your mother had no children that lived.

  18. ribbie149 - Sep 28, 2010 at 10:29 PM

Kudos to all you Tampons who can’t bear the fact that you would have to drive 20-30 minutes to get to a game. Poor babies.

  19. Gobias Industries - Sep 28, 2010 at 10:39 PM

    Dang, I been schooled!

  20. Gobias Industries - Sep 28, 2010 at 10:56 PM

Dang, all you Tampons been schooled!
