Well, now you come to one of the few silver linings to the cloud of Scrooge McLoria ownership (a cloud not unlike the one that enveloped the Trollenberg in The Crawling Eye, but not to be confused with the l4th century mystical treatise The Cloud of Unknowing - this is a cloud both of unknowing and unspending). The situation is so nauseating on its own terms that having a fawning slug like Jerry Manuel here would be gobbled up in the general malaise. Ozzie Guillen (shudder) would have been another story because his big mouth, with those blubber lips like a calving cow's vulva flapping as if caught up in tropical storm force winds, would have called undue attention to his plodding generalship, making things seem even worse than they actually were. Anyway, Manuel would go the way of Fat Freddi and for many of the same reasons: he won't be given the tools to win with either, and then will be blamed for not having had them in the first place.

They used to have a killer bloomin onion, but now have some crap onion “strings”. The baby back ribs ain’t half bad either. I gave up on that place though. I have this family ran italian joint by me called the Spaghetti house. a 20 dollar platter weighs 5 pounds and comes with homemade soup, salad, and all you can eat garlic bread. BYOB. By the time your platter comes out, you’re full.

Mr. Cerrano, did you miss the “as a fan” part? You can read everything I write and will rarely see me say “We” when I talk about the Phillies. I hate when people say we this and we that…unless they are actually on the team. I try not to do it, but I admit I may occasionally slip up. I like Chilis because they have Sam Adams draft, which is my favorite beer. Also, my wife wanted to meet there…so that should clear it up for you. And for jonny…nah, I got the smoke and sweet crispy chicken strips and I have to say that new sauce is pretty incredible. PLus 2 ears of Corn and it wasn’t a bad meal at all. For around $25, with free dessert, it wasn’t even all that much cash either. Got to keep the wife happy if I am to make my quarterly Vegas trip in November.

Clinching the division, best record in the NL, and just all around greatness really takes the zest out of your week as a fan…I can’t imagine what it does to a player. I’m at Chili’s last night, and there’s this group of about 10 people in the bar area cheering every home run like it is game 1 of the World Series. I am looking at them like “You do realize that this is a glorified spring training game, without the Florida sun, don’t you”. I realized, however, that they were college kids from Rowan U. and probably didn’t follow baseball much.

Ahhh, The Phillies….. It was tryout night in Washington last night for the Bench guys. Everyone did a little to make a case to be used during the playoffs, besides Dobbs, who has been anemic all season long. And besides Fransisco who hit two bombs, he did alot to make his case. This guy is good enough to start in right field, and would be if he was with most clubs. Do the Phillies have one of the strongest benches in the major leagues or is it me being a fanboy? Gload, Fransisco, Sweeney, Brown. All real good off the bench.

Good job by the Feather Lice. You have to wonder what the Borg and their nest of brood parasites must be thinking going into the postseason badly overmatched across the board by at least three if not four of the teams they’re going to face, and with Mariano Rivera looking – ready? – old and tired. Like it or not they are not the same team that they were midseason and certainly not the same team that won last year.

Now on to important stuff.

The Feesh are going out not with a bang or whimper but with a splatt!. The manager managed the Braves series like he wasn’t paying any attention or just didn’t give a crap – especially night before last, leaving a rag doll named Anibal Sanchez on the mound when everything he was throwing was getting hit so hard that it’s amazing the balls didn’t break down into quarks and muons on contact. The hitters must have been swinging gently because they were afraid of getting splinters from their bats – they scored, I think, four runs in three games or some such thing. And of course the Red Queen would have been screaming “off with their heads” at that through-the-double-wickets grounder that made Gaby Sanchez and Dan Uggla look like extras from the croquet scene in Heathers.

The Feesh have a critical (!) four game set against the Pirates this weekend, and at four games south of GSA they have to sweep this series in order to finish even. The only reason they have a gossamer hope of doing so is that it’s the Pirates but of course the way they’re schlepping to the finish line even this isn’t much comfort. The next interglacial beckons. They’d be better off spending the trip home tying flies than looking at more of those dreary opposing pitcher videos.
