With the help of a fine outing by starter Tim Stauffer and production from the top of the lineup, the Padres grabbed a 4-2 victory over the Giants on Saturday in San Francisco and kept their playoff hopes alive.

A win in Sunday’s regular season finale would force a one-game playoff for the National League West crown.  A loss probably means the end of the Padres’ season.

Probably.

The Braves fell to the Phillies 7-0 this afternoon and are currently tied with the Giants in the hunt for the National League Wild Card.  Depending what happens tomorrow in Atlanta’s own regular season finale, we could see a one-game playoff to decide the Wild Card as well.

It’s all a bit confusing, sure, but it’s also really, really exciting.  Gotta love October.

NBCSports.com has a breakdown of all the possible playoff scenarios heading into Sunday.

I can afford to love October regardless because in Macondo it’s still in the mid to upper 80s and we’re not sliding inexorably down the chute towards the Great White Death from Above. But I do have to admire the way the Padres suddenly woke up and played themselves back into this thing after they had pretty much somnbambilized their way out of it.
    .
And the Braves? Easy, Craig. Breath slowly and steadily and sip on this stuff. It tastes horrible, I know, but Mother She whipped up a batch especially for you and it will keep your brain from seizing in your sleep.

Assuming all teams are equal, we got a 50/50 shot of at least one playoff game and a 25% shot of two. Go Padres and Braves!

Was that a purposeful portmanteau of “somnambulize” and “bam”? I picture Adam West sleep-walking into a wall.

Pot belly first. Sheesh, that was one Brobdingnagian typo, wasn’t it?

A couple of corrections. First, if the Padres win there isn’t necessarily a playoff for the NL West on Monday. If the Padres win and the Braves lose the Padres are the NL West champs (based on head to head with the Giants) and the Giants are the wildcard. Second, the Braves are currently tied with the Padres, not the Giants.

Yeah, Drew’s no doubt not the only one having trouble getting his mind around it all, but at least his link has it all squared. I think.

Yes, I do believe that is correct. Think the same thing happened a few years ago when the Padres and Dodgers tied for the same record but the Padres got the NL West title due to better head-to-head record. No wild card playoff because the Dodgers had the next best record after division leaders, not tied with anyone else. Fun stuff.
