Over at The Platoon Advantage, The Common Man unearths a controversial call from 1952 that led to some familiar-sounding speculation:
“Next Year for the World Series and perhaps for key games during the regular season, baseball may adopt an idea from horse racing and install a ‘photo finish’ camera at first base to double check the umpires.”
It’s a great story. I remember reading about it once. Sadly, The Common Man leaves out the best part: it’s where an 18 year-old Bud Selig says he’d take it all under advisement, assigns the matter to a committee and then forgets it ever happened.
UPDATE: Wezen-Ball went over this territory last year as well. Found guys criticizing umps due to video replay as far back as 1968.

I seem to remember Steve Garvey getting tossed from a game back in the 80s because he went into the clubhouse, got a little portable TV, and showed the umps the replay on it. Anybody else remember something like this? I can’t guarantee it was Garvey but I’m picturing those Padres uniforms from the 80s.

Selig didn’t forget about it. The committee report is due next April.

Really? How freakin’ long does it take to come to a concensus and write down what you find out? I’m thinking a weelend retreat in the Catskills should suffice… Bud Light is just hoping WE forget by then…

Please anything to reduce mistakes by these umps. I seriously think some them should be looked at as potential Tim Donnehy’s for gambling on the side with how egregious some calls are.
