More important World Series business: National Anthem singers

Oct 26, 2010, 12:31 PM EST

Hayes Carll

The Rangers are blowin’ a great chance to have Hayes Carll or Ray Wylie Hubbard sing the National Anthem before one of their games, but nobody asked me:

Major League Baseball announced Tuesday that soul singer John Legend will perform the national anthem on Wednesday at Game 1 of the series between the San Francisco Giants and the Texas Rangers. Country trio Lady Antebellum is set to perform “The Star-Spangled Banner” on Thursday at Game 2. Games 1 and 2 will take place in San Francisco. On Saturday at Game 3 in Arlington, Texas, pop singer and former “American Idol” champion Kelly Clarkson will sing the anthem. Texas is her home state.

And, for that matter, the Giants are whiffing by not having Huey Lewis or Journey.

Maybe we’ll be surprised with an arena rock version of “God Bless America.”

Well that’s OK, but it sucks when guys like Kenny Wayne Sheppard can come in and SHRED the anthem, JIMI HENDRIX STYLE !!! he’s from Texas too!!!

    • Jonny 5 - Oct 26, 2010 at 12:51 PM

Actually he’s from Louisiana, close enough…

Didn’t Huey Lewis & the News sing “God Bless America” in AT&T Park during the NLCS?

Re: Journey & HLTN — Aren’t there still some State Fairs this month?

Re: Hendrix. Born and raised in Seattle. Sorry.

Was talkin’ KWS. And yes Jimi is from Seattle. But London Killed him. I thought KWS was from Texas with his blues style.

I will be at games 3,4,5 in Arlington. Would much rather have willie Nelson or George Strait–both from Texas–sing. Kelly Clarkson–ugh…

    Go Rangers

This is all on MLB. The further into the post-season a team goes, the less they have control over in-game entertainment. By the time they hit the World Series, MLB is basically running the show. It’s somewhat generic, but there are a lot of teams out there who don’t have the know-how or the ability to pull of flawless in-game entertainment and performances.

Tim’s Neighbor – Screwing up in-game entertainment something awful since April!

I was kind of hoping for Tom Waits, myself….

Now that’s a good call! He lives in my area, I see him around once in a blue moon. Love to hear him sing, “God Bless America”…

I thought MLB or FOX just picked whoever the hottest singer/band is that they can get? Not remembering any specifics due to repressed memory or something, I do seem to remember wondering who in the hell these people were that were singing last year in Philly.

If the dude from Creed ain’t singin’, I ain’t watchin’.

    • Utley's Hair - Oct 26, 2010 at 3:19 PM
