Giants leave playoff roster intact, which means no Barry Zito

Oct 27, 2010, 1:47 PM EDT

Sticking with the same 25-man roster they used in both the NLDS and NLCS, the Giants will not be adding Barry Zito to the pitching staff for the World Series.

There was some speculation that Zito could be added to the World Series roster in place of reliever Guillermo Mota, who went unused in the first two rounds, but apparently manager Bruce Bochy thinks a superfluous right-handed middle reliever is more useful than the veteran left-hander who made $18.5 million this season as part of a seven-year, $126 million deal that runs through 2013.

And it’s tough to blame him.

Zito put together a strong first half, going 8-4 with a 3.51 ERA, but fell apart down the stretch with a 1-8 record and 6.80 ERA in his final 10 outings. He also hasn’t pitched since October 2 and Madison Bumgarner has clearly emerged as the Giants’ fourth starter, so aside from perhaps making Zito feel better about himself or making the $126 million seem like slightly less of a disaster there was no real reason to add him.

      I think it was a smart choice — Zito has done nothing for us! (not that I’m super sure of Mota’s contributions either) Stick with the 25 who got us this far, call me superstitious but I’m a beard-fearing, torture-loving Giants fan and that smooth chin of Zito’s can stay off the roster as far as I’m concerned. So excited Timmy is starting things off for us tonight, SOMA is abuzz right now…lots of Orange and Black! Go Giants!

      Why bring that name up? That name should never be spoken out loud.

    That’s wierd, I thought only the Yankees could get away with crappy contracts and still make it to the World Series.

    Giant’s have $18.5 million Zito off the roster and $13.6 million Rowand riding the pine.

      Yeah, but they have Wooly Willy on their side, which is like having a super hero crossed with a brainless guy with a very black beard (wooly willy).

    Just going off record and having some fun;

    Zito for Alfonso Soriano…hmm….I think such a trade would create a black hole.
