How the Rangers became good

Oct 27, 2010, 9:53 AM EDT

Will McDonald at Royals Review has read every single story that has been written about how the Rangers became successful, and has distilled it into one compact post.

And if anything, I think he’s understating how much credit Nolan Ryan is being given by the national media types.

Local media, too. And players, coaches and front office types within the organization. And fans. And people who used to own the team. And people who tried to buy the team.

How they got good: they got guys that can score in many different ways, and they got the biggest surprise pitching boost of all time.

The Texiera trade did for the Rangers almost as much as the Herschel Walker trade in the NFL did for the Cowboys. The mid-season addition of the best postseason pitcher of all time was the final step. A stud SS, a stud closer and a stud #1 ace. You can build a championship contender with almost any other 22 guys.

Nolan Ryan wasn’t the biggest reason the Rangers became good, unless you want to credit him for those two trades.

You left out how the Rangers used money from every other major league team to build their team.

That’s kinda the idea of revenue sharing, creating a more level playing field; holding that against them doesn’t make sense.

Willmose may not be referring to revenue sharing.
You may remember that the Rangers needed a bailout/loan from MLB prior to the bankruptcy proceedings due to the mismanagement and greed of the prior owner.

Key word there is prior owner. That dick is gone, and the Rangers have been sold. Let sleeping dogs lie.
