Sandy Alderson is getting the old band back together

Sandy Alderson

Joel Sherman reports that that new Mets GM Sandy Alderson wants to bring Paul DePodesta and J.P. Ricciardi on board. Both of these guys, you’ll recall, worked under Alderson in Oakland before going off on their own GM frolics.  Depodesta’s was, in hindsight anyway, pretty successful with the Dodgers, even if they still don’t realize it.  Ricciardi’s in Toronto, not so much, but not terrible either.  Whatever you thought of them as top dogs, though, both are smart baseball guys and rarely do you go wrong by assembling a team full of smart people.

Sherman also says that Alderson is likely to go with an Oakland A’s-style manager: low key, low profile, and totally subservient to the front office. This would seem to eliminate Wally Backman from consideration. That won’t make a lot of Mets fans happy — the fascination with Backman seems to be taking on epic proportions — but that doesn’t mean you can’t bring him in as a third base coach or something.  Whatever happens, I have this feeling that Alderson will navigate that PR minefield just fine.

As a Phillies fan, the Alderson hiring makes me somewhat nervous that the Mutts will be relevant again in the next year or two. The guy is smart and old school, much like Pat Gillick, and we all know what Gillick did for the Phillies the last few years. Unless the Wilpons continue to mettle, which will keep the Mutts down.

I don’t in any way shape of form want Wally Backman near my team. Bobby V. is probably out as well. Unfortunate that Tim Wallach is off the market. Maybe they make a run at Ryne Sandberg? Failing that…. Bring back Dallas Green!! We need some keister-kicking in Queens!

I’m still trying to get over how the Mets made a smart decision like hiring Sandy. Was it a fluke? Did they not mean to? Did they actually try to call Sandy Alomar for a GM interview and accidentally called Alderson? These touch phones can be tricky!

Maybe now they’ll call Sandy Duncan to be their pitching coach and end up calling Dave Duncan instead.

No Bobby V in NY! Can’t we just start a Valentine rumor for old times sake?

Did DePodesta ever work for Alderson? I thought Beane hired him?

You’re right. Beane replaced Alderson in 1998, and DePo joined in 1999.

Depodesta worked for Alderson in San Diego.

Ahh, good call. Forgot about that.

So this isn’t necessarily getting the band back together. This is kind of like Dave Grohl starting a new band with Krist Novoselic a Foo Fighter. Or something like that….

What will happen to this blog in the offseason if the Mutts start making prudent moves? The lay up material regarding large market teams will drop by a ton.

    Is Art Howe next?
