Greg Maddux turned down a much better offer Yankees and went to the Braves. Likely “competitive callous” wasn’t exactly the reason. It was likely more to do with living in NY and or George Steinbrenner.

I believe Bernie Williams may have done something similar when he was going to be a free agent. He spoke to The Boss after Boston offered their contract, and asked him if he would come close to Boston’s offer… And that was after the Yanks had snubbed him a few times with low ball offers. I can understand no one wanting to go to Boston anyway…

I believe Mark Texeria picked New York over Boston because his wife liked New York betterthan Boston as a place to live

I can certainly see his point. You build up such a competitive hatred for certain teams based on your own situation (plus it’s not that hard to hate the Yanks and Sox anyways). Somehow in your own head you feel like you will dislike yourself or it will make you become hated by others because you have to contemplate playing for someone that you already personally dislike.

Actually, Andy Pettitte told the Red Sox to not even bother making an offer when he left Houston and came back to New York. Part of the problem, though, is that typically the agent tells the player to keep his mouth shut, because even if a team isn’t in the running for these types of reasons, you don’t want other teams to know there’s one less bidder.
