142 players became free agents last night

Under a recent agreement, players no longer need to file for free agency. Rather, free agency-eligible players automatically became free agents as soon as the World Series ended.  The MLBPA wasted absolutely no time last night telling us who those players are, issuing a press release while the Giants were still jumping around on the field (see the list of all the players below).  There will be others who join the list, of course, as arbitration-eligible players are non-tendered and stuff like that happens.

Teams have only a five-day exclusive negotiating period, down from the 15 days of years past, so there won’t be much time to breathe before the hot stove news starts up hot and heavy.  Lucky for you none of us here at HBT have lives, so we’ll be on the news and rumors like white on rice.  Make sure to keep an HBT window up at all times between now and, oh, February, because we’ll have the latest stuff up faster than just about anyone.

Here are the free agent-eligibles. Some of them — like Bronson Arroyo, for example — have options and may be off the list soon. Most of them, however, will be coming to a new team near you in the next several months.

He’s WERTH it!!! Ruben, all those sold out games in 2010…… I know you have the $$$$$…. Although I’ll shit a golden egg if he signs with my Phills. Literally. A golden egg.

It amazes me just how lucky some people/teams can be. Remember all the outrage when Sabean signed Renteria to a 2 year $18.5 million contract? Considering how truly awful he was for the Red Sox in 2005, everyone said this was a terrible contract. 2 years later, he is the WS MVP. Cody Ross was cut by the Marlins, and ONLY picked up by the Giants to block the Padres. He’s your NLCS MVP. Pat the bat once again had himself a great World Series, but for a guy hitting .040 in his World Series career, he has two rings. Amazing.

Congrats Giants. Amazing that if not for a 10 game losing streak by the San Diego Padres you would likely have been watching October baseball.

if you can co that, Rube might just sign YOU.

There are a lot of Yankee and Tampa Bay players on the list as well as 7 Red Sox (including Ortiz who has a team option). There could be major changes in the AL East next season.

142 players and not a single Indian… I guess there’s no need to mess with success.

    • proudlycanadian - Nov 2, 2010 at 12:03 PM

Did the Indians trade away their impending free agents? The Jays kept theirs, because all but Overbay are worth draft picks if they sign elsewhere.

VMart and Cliffy would’ve been FAs this year.

  4. Detroit Michael - Nov 2, 2010 at 11:23 AM

The guys from Rick Ankiel (think alphabatical order restarting with “Atlanta”) on down are the ones who have options pending. The players above that definitely are free agents.
