The Mets will begin interviewing potential managers tomorrow

Troubling innuendo aside, the Mets are expected to start interviewing managerial candidates this week, Wally Backman included. That according to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News. Chip Hale is also expected to be interviewed this week.

Backman and Hale are both internal candidates, of course.  There are several other internal guys such as Bob Melvin who will be considered as well. External candidates would come later. Sandy Alderson says that he wants to have  a new manager in place by the end of the month.

…and, there’s a rumor that Bobby Valentine is rumored to be a candidate for the opening, sources close to someone say.

Candidates as diverse as Henny Youngman and Donald Duck are also being considered to not ruffle any feathers to the proud squad. There’s some need for continuity, after all.

I just hope they hire a good strategic manager. They need a motivator but the players have to feel the manager knows what he is doing. Of the internal crop I think Chip Hale is the best with Bob Melvin as bench coach. I don’t mind Wally Backman but hiring an 86 Met smells too much of Jeff Wilpon’s hand and besides the Mets need to create a new legacy not keep going back to the past.

Externally I’ve heard rumblings about Pete Mackanin, John Gibbons and Clint Hurdle.
