The Seattle Media will never let go of the Mariners drafting Brandon Morrow, from Cal, instead of Tim Lincecum, from UW. Thanks Bavasi for all of your great draft picks and "great" free agent signings of Carlos Silva, Raúl Ibáñez, Richie Sexson, Adrián Beltré, Jarrod Washburn, Scott Spiezio, Rich Aurilia, Carl Everett, Matt Lawton, and Jeff Weaver. Oh yeah don't forget the wonderful trade of Adam Jones, George Sherrill, and Chris Tillman for Érik Bédard. Thanks for the 100 loss season with the 100 million dollar payroll, "money well spent."

George Brett and Mike Schmidt were drafted 5th and 6th, respectively, in the 1971 draft... in the second round. Frank Tanana, Jim Rice and Rick Rhoden are pretty much the only good players drafted in front of them.

The Good 'Ol Days? Yeah, not so good, really.

I remember the surprise in particular when Seattle didn't take him, since he's from Washington. I think the only guy there who's head and shoulders above Lincecum is Longoria. But this kinda thing happens every year, and most teams didn't have him in the top 3 even if they were sure his stature wouldn't be an issue. Sometimes guys surprise you, and Lincecum is one of those guys.
