Hernandez was a BIG and admitted user of PEDs (cocaine during games no less) in the 1980s. With the gambling scandal in the clubhouse about to blow big hole in the Mets, PEDs user as manager is the last thing they need.

Why would we want Cliff Clavin as the manager anyway?

And if we want to indulge in ’86 nostalgia, why Backman? Why not Hernandez or Darling, who are at least well-versed in the foibles of the current team? Or Tim Teufel, another ’86 second baseman who has minor league managing experience? Or maybe we should just turn the clock back to Davey Johnson, an underappreciated manager of late.

And I hear Lenny Dykstra has a surefire way to make gold from straw.

15 men have gone to the World Series in their first season as a major league manager but only three have won.

Bucky Harris won with the Senators as a player manager in 1924. Eddie Dyer won with the Cardinals in 1946 and Ralph Houk won with the Yankees in his first two season as a manager in 1961 and 1962.

He could have meant no managing experience before his first managing job, but everyone has no managing experience before becoming a manager.
