He didn’t sell on Hughes in the Santana trade because he knew he could get Sabathia the following off season. There just isn’t that much there where Cash’ can say, ‘I’ll just get by with Joba/Nova and save the money for next year.’ The St. Louis aces are under team options. Wandy is interesting, but he’ll want a longish deal, and he’ll be 33. After that, you’re meddling in the You’re Old category. The Yankees may not be desparate for Cliff Lee, but there really isn’t a good Plan B, this year or the next.

Well, that and a thin attempt at strengthening their bargaining position. I doubt it will work to convince Cliff Lee that they’ll walk away from the table if it gets too crazy, though.
