Look, there was no way that with that pinchpenny philosophy of theirs driving the deal from day one that they weren't going to fail on an epic scale even if, say, they had gotten moderately successful results from those kids. Of course it failed. The question is, why? It's not as if they selected prospects who didn't look like they had solid upsides. But It was a salary dump thinly disguised as a blockbuster raid on the Tigers' stock of EYPs. I don't think either of them were ever put in a position where they could maximize their talents and develop properly. Maybin had the ghost of Miggie looking over his shoulder from the git-go. A couple of seasons back they let him sit on the bench for six weeks or so staring at his shoes when he should have been back down in AAA working on issues. Go figure that one out. Even so, at this point it would surprise me much less if Maybin suddenly developed some traction than if Miller turned himself around; I think, as I said, the Feesh ruined Miller. He'd need a soul transplant to believe in himself again.

Gator, I'm not saying that they couldn't still pan out, they're both still young. But, if you look at it 3 years later and see that essentially the Fish got Edward Mujica, Ryan Webb and Dustin Richardson and some other guys who never panned out and/or are still in the minors for Miguel Cabrera, don't you think that's pretty much an epic fail on their part?

We'll leave the jury out on Maybin for another season.

However, I think you're missing a major point on what I think was the destruction of Andrew Miller by the cheapskate McLoria regime. He wasn't ready for the show but the Feesh stuck him in there anyway, hoping the phenom would take the stink...er, sting...out of salary-dumping Cabrera. When he didn't - when he went into battle looking like a deer in the headlights of a Mack double semi on an interstate highway at three AM and his confidence was being beaten out of him start after start, the Feesh brain trust (which is beginning to sound oxymoronic) stubbornly refused to send him down for seasoning until he had been reduced to pitching batting practice as a mop-up reliever. Anything to avoid spending some real money on a real starter. Scrooge McLoria and the Chihuahua ruined this kid, and if he'd been an even slightly lower profile prospect the pucker-pocketed son of a bitch would have sold him for ethanol instead of trading him. It may well be that he wouldn't have panned out anyway but all you had to do was to study the look on his face when they sent him up against Pujols and Ryan Howard and Chipper Jones to see that he was just a nervous kid not ready for prime time.

With the trade of Andrew Miller (the other main player acquired from the Tigers in the Cabrera trade), is this an admission that they didn't do well at all with the trade? I'll admit, I'm a Tigers fan, but I was in the vast minority thinking that neither of these guys would pan out and that we made a considerable steal with this trade (even with the albatross named Dontrelle attached)...I know they're both young still, but it looks like those of us in the minority were right so far a couple years after the trade, especially if they are being shipped off by FLA.
