Even Yogi Berra wouldn’t set foot in Yankee Stadium for years because of how he was treated by Steinbrenner and yet the team and the fans managed to move on without him. And over the last ten years or so the fact that Yogi was able to come back into the fold and be honored while he is alive as the Yankee Legend he is everyone is finally happy about that.

So if Yogi Berra, the cather for TEN World Series and not only a Yankee icon, but an American icon could be on the outs with his old team for a long time, it can possibly happen with Jeter. These last five years or so as a player may end up awkward but fifteen or twenty years from now Jeter will be wearing pin stripes during Spring Training, working with the players and being the Yankee ambassador that Reggie Jackson and Yogi are right now.

Or, perhaps it will take even longer. Jeter may want to be part owner of another team one day. Or maybe he’ll go the Mattingly route and want to manage and he’ll stay in baseball for fifty more years and we’ll be talking about him in 2060 in the same way we still hear about Don Zimmer and only as a mane of 86 or 87 years old will Derek come back to the Yankees for the first time since they retired the number two in 2020.

Joe DiMaggio was an icon for the Yankees as well, and his contract disputes sometimes dragged on. If this goes into January, it’s not the end of the world. The media will only portray it that way. Yes, I just lobbed a grenade at the media in general. I should say, the New York media will portray it that way.

I say offer him a 3 year, $45Million contract. If you want to make it 4 years? Fine, but it’s still a $45Million contract.

The problem is the ’09 year, as of now, looks like a real outlier between ’07, ’08, ’09 and ’10. In the other years, he’s essentially a 3WAR player or roughly $10-12M/yr via fangraphs. So a 3/$45M contract offers his value + a few million more for “marketing value” or whatever business reasoning you can offer. Is another team going to beat that? If so, good luck because the one thing the Yanks are able to do more so than any other team is absord financial mistakes (cf Igawa, Kei). If another team offers him a 4/$80M contract, and he’s worse in ’11 than in ’10, that’ll kill most franchises.

I doubt jeter is going to come off his price too much. He is on the highest paid team and is their capt. He is also very visible to the media and a fan favorite in ny. I guess we are about to find out how much that is worth, my guess is double what any other team would pay on the open market. We saw that he did not move from short when arod was the dominant ss in baseball and one of the most dominant of all time so i am doubting he is going to budge on a contract dispute. I know most of my friends think this is going to get a bit ugly but jeter is a classy guy i think there is also a chance for us to be surprised, whether he changes his mind on the money or the yankees overpay which in itself wouldnt be a bad thing to keep what i consider their most iconic player in the last 30 years or so.

I love Derek Jeter but I back the Yankees on this one. A three-year deal would be a gift he could get from no one else. Not after last year. The Yankees need to be thinking about a new shortstop – maybe not in 2011 but certainly in 2012. He makes all of the plays he can get to, but he is getting to fewer and fewer. And he picked a bad year to look so hopeless at the plate. He was handsomely paid for the past 10 years so he has no cause to complain if the Yankees pay the market price now.

As we were discussing yesterday, there’s nothing wrong with Jeter asking for a similar deal to Arod; however, the Yanks have zero interest in offering something like that. That’s where the divide is. The Arod deal was stupid six ways from sunday. That doesn’t meant they should offer another idiotic deal just because it’s Derek Jeter.

Also, can someone please tell me why Jeter is coming off all these negotiations like his sh!t doesn’t stink? On the open market there’s no way he gets more than a $10M/AAV contract, and he’s [according to sources] trying to extort $20M+? This is about greed, plain and simple, and the pendulum swings both ways. Too bad the morons at the NYDN, the Post, Newsday et al don’t realize this.

Couldn’t agree with you more Kevin S. Jeter’s been paid for his performance as a Yankee up to now. Yankee fans need to understand for 10 years he’s been making on average $19M per. Ten years ago with the exception of ARod he was probably the highest paid baseball player, heck even 5 years ago he was probably in the top 3 highest paid. Now it’s time to pay him for his future contributions to the Yankees as a ballplayer on the field and to a considerably lesser degree what he means to the Yankees off the field. Yankee President said it best “it’s a business”.

If Jeter can’t tell the difference between a guy coming off an MVP in his age-32 season and a guy coming off a career-worst year in his age-36 season, he deserves all the negativity that will come his way when he turns down the Yankees’ offer. A-Rod had leverage, and his deal was still so stupid it got Hankenstein banished to the netherworld. Jeter’s dealing with Cashman and Hal.

Everything criticizing Jeter or looking at this objectively makes sense until you look at ARod’s contract from Jeter’s perspective. That is the key to any potential bitterness here.

Jeter deserves to be paid and probably will be overpaid. But no way should the Yankees cave in to 4, 5 or 6 years. In my opinion even 3 years is to long, but if that’s what it takes to sign him so be it. Three years at $17M per is probably at least twice as much and at least one year longer then any other team would even consider paying him. Let’s not make believe Jeter is a martyr. Over the last 10 years the Yankees have paid him on average $19M per not exactly chump change.

I’ve been a Yankee fan since the mid 50′s. No one player is bigger then the Yankees and that includes Jeter.

The Yankees should tell Jeter to see what he can get from the highest bidding team and bring it to the Yankees and if the Yankees think he’s worth it they will take it under consideration . This guy has a lot of balls asking for a four year contract . I personally think he should be getting one year contracts after his play last year, and also considering his age . It seems he’s trying to milk the Yankees for one last contract , if they’re stupid enough to give him anymore than a two year deal then they deserve to be screwed by him .
