panda hold on!!!!! the o’s really wanted tex and thank god we didnt get him cuz i think he is a loser!!!! but i think beltre will sign with the o’s and the o’s get kornerko or dunn or maybe even derrek lee and we will not be basement material this year

In fairness, I think pretty much everyone who thinks at all about baseball assumed his breakout MVP season signaled the arrival of the power everyone had been waiting for from Mauer his entire career. He certainly looked poised to be pretty much the best hitter in the AL for the next few years, even if you considered his monster 2009 to be his ceiling. And he plays the most demanding defensive position extremely well by most accounts. Locking him up and paying him like one of the top 5 players in the game after ’09 really looked like a great idea. Of course, if he continues to be a 10-HR kind of guy for the remainder of his career, the contract looks bad. But all-time bad? I’m no expert, but I’d wager it’s not even close.

My mistake. Looks like I missed the extra year Oakland threw in. I believe the purported Boston offer was four years, though at an average of $200K more per year.

I’ll revise that $20M to $15M, not saying he’s worth it, but somebody will pay that.

If you think the Beltre money is bad, think about what the Twins gave Mauer. $23 million a year for a guy that isn’t going to hit for power(9 home runs) or drive in runs(75 RBIs). And that’s for 8 years.

Probably one of the worst contracts in MLB history.

Beltre was worth almost $14M a season for the five years he spent in Seattle. The idea that he was a bust over the period of that contract is flat wrong. He put together several excellent seasons and people didn’t notice because Safeco is death to right-handed power. Even when he’s not playing at his peak, he’s still quite valuable.

That being said, is he going to be worth ~$13M over the next five? I wouldn’t bet on it… though I won’t be shocked if he is. He seems to be a pretty athletic player and should age fairly well.

Beltre isn’t due for another good season until 2015, so you gotta sign him for 5 years to make sure you get that elusive good year. In the last 10 years he’s had two seasons with an OPS > .801 and 5 seasons were he hit like a all glove no hit SS.

The A’s have the money (over $ 20M came off the books with Sheets and Chavez, plus they ran big surplusses the last two years).

But why would they commit this amount to a player with Beltre’s checkered record of performance?After his contract push at LA landed him his first $ 62M contract, his OPS dropped 300 points to .716. Then .793, .801, .784, .683 and last year’s .918. Oakland is more favorable to hit in than Safeco, but it’s still a pitcher’s park. Finally, Kouzmanoff’s OPS last year was .679, not good, but he was adjusting to the AL. His RF was 9.18. He earned $3.1M. Beltre’s RF was 8.16. I know RF isn’t the best stat, but overall numbers suggest Kouz is a solid 3B, and way cheaper than Beltre, especially since Beltre is likely to revert to an OPS near Kouz.

I guess we’re to believe they’ve shot past the RedSox’ $52M budget for Beltre? Yeah I know, they denied that. Probably got tossed out there in hopes of keeping the price down.

Where are the A’s channeling this money from? Do they somehow expect an attendance bump based on the Giants winning the title? As if some new bandwagon SF fans will show up at the wrong ballpark by mistake. Ha!

Nothing against the A’s really, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this is just a ploy on their part. Sure they’d like Beltre at that price. The reality is they can look good to their fans (see: Nats and O’s in 2009 throwing money at Teixeira), without actually having to pay that much money out. Once the big boys open their wallets the pricetag for Beltre should pass $20M per year.
