It’s worth noting here that when the Rays extended him and the Angels traded for him, both were considered pretty good deals. And he performed after moving to the Angels, posting a 1.73 ERA and 1.046 WHIP in 2009. It’s only Kazmir’s own performance in 2010 – and subsequent inability to correct it – that makes his contract look so bad and make him seem a burden. This isn’t GMJ… Kazmir used to be good.

Trade a guy but still be paying the majority of his contract. Just like Gary Matthews Jr. who will be paid $11 million by the Angels for 2011 even though he hasn’t played for them since 2009.
