I'm not sure what baseball games xpensivewinos was watching, but Victor was one of our "best" players this season. We had so many of our players out on the DL Victor came through for us with not only his catching, but also covered first and hit more than his share of not only basehits, but some good slammers as well. I think any Boston Fan who actually watched the games this season would say that Victor Martinez was a real "TEAM PLAYER" and Boston was fortunate to have him wearing their uniform. He is well worth holding onto and I for one would rather see him stay in Boston before looking for someone to add onto the team. GO VICTOR !!!!
I think SALTAMACCHIA is great also and with the two of them for 2011 we will do well. I myself would love to see JASON VARITEK stay with Boston in an advisory role for our catchers and pitchers. He has knowledge that he has picked up over the years that is invaluable! We have some great TEAM PLAYERS and could make for a real good year in 2011. Looking forward to a fantastic season next year.

Did Martinez go to Notre Dame, because I simply do not understand the hype machine. This guy is so overrated it's incredible. Victor Martinez is a classic example of how fantasy baseball distorts the value of a player when fans evaluate real-life value.

He is a BRUTAL defensive catcher and the next guy he throws out will be his first. The offense he provides as a "catcher" is not worth what a defensive liability he is.

Shame on the Red Sox and all of their resources for being in this position with regards to their catching, but way over paying for Martinez now on a long-term deal is only going to make matters worse.

Spend some money to fill some of the other huge holes and work on acquiring a catcher via trade at some point.

Absolutely insane to spend a bunch of money on this guy................uhhhhhhhh, kinda like Seattle did with Beltre after his only other decent year. Please move on, bring in some quality guys who will provide better value for the dollar and let the Tigers, Orioles and some of these other teams get stuck with these guys and the ten of millions they'll be owed when they're hitting .210 and riding the bench.

Just because Martinez might be perceived as better than the other catchers out there is no reason to overspend on him.
