It'll be interesting to see how much of that contract is a base figure and how much depends upon incentives. The Feesh have been exceptionally fortunate with deals like this - Pudge Rodriguez and, yes, even Carl Pavano come to mind. From a fans' point of view, of course, the problem is that when these scrapheap or bum-year reclamation projects do pan out, Scrooge McLoria is never in the giving vein the following offseason and the newly moulted birds of paradise promptly go settle in someone else's roost, leaving a slightly bitter aftertaste in our dozen or so mouths. See Pudge Rodriguez and Carl Pavano again, although, of course, in the case of one who was made Borg, the implicit criticism is a little unfair, and some of the anticipatory bitterness still tastes of Uggla.

Notwithstanding, this gives the Feesh a starting rotation of Josh Johnson, Ricky Nolasco (unless he's traded later this weenter), Anibal Sanchez, Christ Volstad (unless he, too is traded) and Javier Vazquez. If Sanchez finally returns to his rookie season consistency and Nolasco stays, that's a pretty decent front five (assuming that Vazquez pans out). Since all five are righthanders, and since the guys that were used last year as fifth or spot starters - Alex Sanabia and Brian Sanches - are northpaws as well, I think it's safe to assume that at least one of the above four holdovers will be gone by April. The question will be whether the new acquisitions in the boolpen and, most of all, whether Leo Nunez can find some conseestency to go with his velocity or whether he still thinks the bottom of the ninth is a nice time to throw batting practice to the opposition.
