Couldn’t agree more in terms of total WAR. There’s no question that Jeter has been the more valuable player over his career. That said, Rivera has consistently outperformed his contract, while Jeter has been overpayed nearly every year. Further, Rivera has always come across as a team guy, while Jeter has occasionally come across as petty, especially where A-Rod is concerned. And I think that’s why Rivera gets fan support that Jeter doesn’t.

Jeter has been way more important to the Yankees five WS titles than Rivera has. You can’t even compare a full time positional player of Jeter’s caliber over a 60-70 inning pitcher.

Closers are vastly overrated, even the best of the best.

mcsnide, you said it all, A class act and a guy that’s respectful of the other side of the bargaining table, unlike Jeter. If you could possibly pick one man( we all know you can’t, being a team sport) that is responsible for the success since 1996 it would be Rivera.Think of all the wins he’s saved, the man is incredible. Jeter could learn from Rivera.

It really does speak volumes when you consistently never hear a word about Rivera’s contract negotiations, even after 15 years on the team.
That’s remarkably rare, and it wins over the fans because few of us like this tug-o-war crap otherwise.

I’m glad to hear the Rivera negotiations are coming along. In my view he is a more important piece to the Yankee’s success at this stage then Jeter. That plus the fact Mo had a very good year last year and isn’t negotiating from a point of weakness. Good luck Mo, I hope you get at or close to what you are looking for.
