Could Greinke be converted to play SS four out of every five days? If so, this just may be a real spot where the Yankees’ could “economize” a bit.

I’ve done an analysis of the anticipated Yankee payroll for 2011 factoring in Lee signing, including Jeter, Mo and Pettitte, resigning some bullpen help and factoring in raises for players like Hughes for arbitration, etc… (In my numbers I’ve included $23M for Lee & $44M for Jeter, Mo and Pettitte combined) The Yankees do have some money coming off the books Vazquez and Nick Johnson the big ones come to about $17.5M combined.
This will probably make non Yankee fans cringe but I figure the opening day payroll for the 25 man ML roster will be $216M (that does not include Greinke).

They have to pay Greinke too. People go nuts because the Yankees can afford to do it when their teams can’t. Other teams have to cherish their Farm players and make them grow into talents. All the while hoping the Yankees don’t swipe them away with their evil checkbook once the player becomes noticeably talented and they lose control of their player’s contract. You know, it’s jealousy.

The Yankees aren’t going to trade Hughes. He just started to come into his own last season and he’s only going to get better.

I can see the Yankees offering up: Nova, Chamberlain & one of the catching prospects and the PTBNL (which one can only hope is AJ). Actually just kidding about AJ, only because someone would have to be deaf, dumb and blind to take him.

My guess is that if they can upgrade the rotation from “Burnett” to “Greinke,” they’ll muddle by with Cervelli, Romine, and whoever they can pluck off the FA scrap heap at catcher. If Montero wasn’t untouchable for three months of Cliff Lee, I don’t think he’s untouchable for two years of Zack Greinke. Maybe the price tag will wind up being too high for Cashman, but I don’t think the Yankee system lacks the value necessary to land Greinke.

As i said months ago. Those 20 teams he had a no trade to were ont that list so he could negotiate his own new contract. His agent is no fool. He doesn’t want to go to another team without a new “BIg” contract in place. He is crazy like a fox!

Yeah but they’ve just basically handed the catching job to Montero, no? They’ve been very stingy giving up their top prospects in the recent past. I could see them packaging Hughes and a number of lesser prospects, but not both of Hughes and Montero, and I can see another team being able to match a Hughes/2 other guys type deal.

I am a big Zack fan. I hope he goes to a winner. I have no problem with him going to NY and winning a ring, as long as he does it this year or next. Then, I hope we beat NY’s butt in the playoffs with the young studs we pick up from trading Zack.

Not sure Hughes has really lost his luster – being a league-average starter at his age is still pretty valuable, and that’s what he was last year. The jewel is obviously Montero, and the Yankees have a number of pretty high-ceiling pitchers who are a couple years out. I think the question is whether or not the Royals feel Montero can catch, and if not, whether they take him for the value he provides anyway and sort out their 1B/DH logjam later. The Yankees’ system has the value to land Greinke, though.

Who do the Yankees even have to trade? The Royals aren’t going to want any crap contracts (So no AJ), and guys like Joba and Phil Hughes have lost their luster a bit. Is the Yankees farm deep enough to get them Grienke? You know KC is gonna want them to back up the truck for this guy.

Not sure why the Yankees are the only team not allowed to use their farm system to acquire talent through trades. Why should anybody go nuts over them getting Greinke? I thought the issue everybody had was them “buying” players through free agency without giving up their young talent. I guess it’s really that the Yankees just aren’t allowed to make moves to improve themselves without being criticized for it.
