I’m all for the Red Sox taking on Jeters contract 3 years $20M per. Then the Yankees can move ARod over to short for 2 or 3 years and turn around and sign Beltre for $15 for 4 years. See who gets more value for their dollars. Done deal, do it.

You are either one of the most devout, loyal and currently hurt Yankees fan I’ve ever come across, or this was your liquid lunch talking. “[B]ut he is way underrated right now”? I mean on offense, but It’s hard to take that last line seriously.

Anyone commanding anywhere from $15-25M per season, depending on which side you listen to, is not underrated by any stretch of the imagination.

craig calcaterra has referred to jeter as a ” poor defender ” which is conclusive proof that he either doesn’t watch
the games or , if he does, has little understanding of what he sees. if he really understood the nature of the game he would realize that teams with ” poor defenders “at shortstop do not flirt with 100 wins each season.
anyway, shaughnessy’s comments are easier to deride than support but his suggestion is an example of creative thinking
and deserves more respect than the comments above give it.
everyone seems to be jumping on the ” jeter was overrated ” bandwagon but he is way underrated right now.

Actually, there’s only one Marc Normandin in Boston. I’m sure it’s possible that there are a few Peter Abrahams, but I only know of one who covers baseball there.

The Red Sox have made some signings that will make you scratch your head, but they don’t make a habit of throwing money away. They don’t need Jeter, especially at his outrageous contract demands. The Red Sox and Yankees seem to always to be after the same players, but in this case not a SS thats 37 yrs. old and in rapid decline.Jeter is trying to get as much as he can from the Yankees, but it seems it might back fire on him.

Seems like a poke at the yankees to me is all. He is not serious about taking on 60 mill in salary. If boston did that they would free ny to go get a better ss at 5-8 million a year and ny would hen be free to spend the balance on imrpoving an aging roster. It is in bostons and any al east teams best interest to drive up jeters price but not to actually take on his salary. My suggeston for opposing teams is to make him an very high one year offer possibly with a position change just to add incentive for him to turn it down. Hopefully that would drive his price up and further hinder any attempts by ny to rebuild their aging roster. At the very worst he calls your bluff and you pick up a guy for one year who is about to get his milestone hit 3000. Again the goal would be to prevent ny from having the roster flexibility to buy or trade for any player they want and to keep their aging roster run down and tired heading into the playoffs. Tulos signing earlier today may have some effect on jeters final price as well.

Nah, let’s run with this. According to Cots, the Red Sox payroll obligations with arb raises puts them around $134M. Add Jeter at $20M, shift him to 3rd, so now we’re at $154M. Re-sign Varitek since you need someone to back up Salty, so that puts you around $155-157M. Now, do you sign either Crawford or Werth? That adds another $15-$20M per year. Now the Sox are around $170-175M in total contracts, and hello luxury tax!

The Red Sox budget could absorb $20 million per season so that really isn’t the issue. They or any other team that can actually afford Jeter (very few) should only go after Jeter if they fill he would an upgrade over what they have. Would Jeter be an upgrade over Scutaro? Renteria? Even if the answer is yes, it is likley marginal at best. Plus, if you buy into Jeter’s value being tied to the fact he has worn Yankee pinstripes for the better part of two decades, his value doesn’t simply translate into the uniform of another team.

I don’t buy into the damaged psyche theory; if/when Jeter moves on so will the Yankees. Just because they would prefer to not see Jeter wear the uniform of the Red Sox or Giants or whomever, doesn’t mean it would cripple them in any way. They would more than survive.

Wow! 60 million to damage the psyche of the Yanks? You know what would be more logical? Put a bounty on each and every players head on the Yankees. 1 million a piece. It would still be more economical than his idea, and there is no way in Hell Bahhhstan is getting beat by the Yankees Minor leaguers. Sure my idea is disgusting and wrong, and i’d never promote the idea. But that would at least be effective. Dan’s Idea is terrible, and I hope it was nothing but a failed attempt at humor. Cause it’s just dumb… Imagine the writing material if it did happen though……..
