Werth (righty)more, Crawford (lefty) less. The Sox still need to add an outfielder, as they have two (Cameron and Drew) coming off the books after 2011.

Well this is big money here in the making. The Padres couldn’t swing his salary imo and they’re getting some good guys that’ll cost combined, a fraction of what Gonzalez is worth. So it’s a win / win situation that keeps the RS competing in the AL east where they have that 17 million $ per year, all star, gold glove caliber short stop in pinstripes to do battle with. And this will allow the Padres to quietly sink back to mediocrity and save some cash to stuff in their pockets…

For all those bitching about the prospects that the Padres got for Gonzalez:

Adrian Gonzalez, age 20, Portland Sea Dogs: 138 games, batted .266/.344/.437
Anthony Rizzo, age 20, Portland Sea Dogs: 107 games .263/.334/.481

That’s after Rizzo lost almost his entire 2008 season to frickin’ cancer. The kid’s a beast, and he’s not even the best prospect you got in this deal.

You got a lot more for him per capita than the Feesh got for Dan Uggla. But then that's what happens when you don't have the Titan of Tighhtwads, Scrooge McLoria, for an owner. He was so eager to clear that bottom line that he squeezed Uggla off the payroll like a watermelon seed.

Catcher – Salty, believe it or not. Theo has been after him for years. We’ll see how that works out…

Shortstop – Lowrie can be the best SS in the AL if he’s healthly (that says a lot about AL shortstops). If he’s not, Scutaro is still a decent option. The super-slick fielding Iglesias could be ready by mid-season.

DH – Ortiz. If he finally falls off the cliff for good this year, you could work some internal options (platoon Kalish/Cameron in the OF and make Drew the DH). It’s also the easiest position to address in-season if it’s really a problem.

Yeah its a bummer on Rizzo, but you have to give up talent to get talent. Another thing is if Salty, Lars Anderson, Lowrie, and Kalish come through, that’s a lot of good cheap young talent to start filling in the gaps of JD Drew & Ortiz.

Big Popi is lucky that there are no quality DH’s on the free agent market or he would have been looking for a job just like Manny?

It might not matter that much for Rizzo, the guy is extremely strong. I didn’t get up to Portland this year, but I caught a few of their games on NESN and the ball really carries off his bat. All the more impressive for a 20 year old kid who’s not that far removed from chemo. He’s really the guy I hated to lose in this trade. Kelly is great and all, but he doesn’t really project as an ace-of-aces, and Boston has 4/5ths of a starting rotation locked up for the foreseeable future. Whereas Rizzo is a guy would could BE Adrian Gonzalez in a few years.

Fenway actually plays rather even for left-handers. It is the eighties that benefit most from playing in Fenway. They built the bullpens out in right field to make right field a little less spacious.

Excellent point. Too bad for Rizzo, though. Fuentes may have an advantage, given SD’s advantage for triples, and his defense would play well in that spacious OF as well. Assuming he ever makes it that far, of course.

Assuming that he is healthy, this seems to be a great move by a team that certainly needs help. It will be interesting to see who they trade to San Diego.

Yeah, that shoulder does worry me. Presumably that risk is factored into the trade and extension negotiations, and the Sox have both the Padres’ medical records and their own physical, but it still worries me.

But if he’s healthy, that guy’s going to destroy Fenway. Hell, he’d do great in any park that’s not SD.
