Um, in 2010 Cruz was in right nearly every game he played. He did quite well there defensively. If the Rangers sign Crawford, and he won’t play center, that leaves Hamilton as full time CF. Not a good thing, he’s just too big and too fearless to play there and not hurt himself. So, trade Cruz to make room for Crawford? Cruz had considerably better numbers than Crawford:

Cruz- BA.318 SLUG.609 OPS.950 22HRs 78RBIs 108games
Crawford- BA.307 SLUG.495 OPS.851 19HRs 90RBIs 154games

Cruz is eligible for arbitration for the first time for 2011, I believe, and will get a good raise from the $440k he made for 2010, but not near what Crawford would cost.

I don’t think the Rangers need to spend money on Crawford, especially if he won’t play CF.

Cruz could move to right, he seems to have the skills for it. Outfield of cruz, hamilton, crawford, seems amazing to me. I also believe they have the dh spot to fill, maybe resigning vlad, but with cruz in that role if crawford signs is not the worst thing that could happen. Vlad still has great baserunning skills, but his legs are gone and will one day ground him for good.

Thanks. I don’t see why the Rangers would want him then. They’d like to keep Hamilton out of CF. Unless they plan to trade Cruz, they’d have to play Ham in CF full time. I know Crawford is a great player, but Cruz ain’t no slouch, and he’s a helluva lot cheaper.

Carl has made it clear that he doesn’t want to play center field, although he certainly has the talent to do so.

A question for someone more familiar with Crawford than myself- can he play center, or is he strictly a left fielder?
