The Mets seem locked in with Ike Davis at first base for the long-term.

The Cubbies are--from everything I've read--pretty much tapped out in the money department and likely to try Tyler Colvin at first base next season.

The Dodgers have James Loney who isn't a superstar, but is solid and they don't seem to have the kind of scratch it'd take to ink Gonzo long-term either. I'd also question if there's enough talent left in that farm system to get a trade done within the division.

The Rangers could make sense if they miss out on Lee and decide to improve on offense. They've got some studs left in the system and would probably be down with inserting Gonzo into the lineup between guys like Kinsler, Hamilton and Young for the better part of the next decade.

If the information on the Nationals/Werth trade is accurate 7 years $126M the Red Sox opportunities to upgrade their offense is shrinking. Especially with the Gonzalez deal falling through. You know based on those numbers Crawford is going be looking for a minimum of 7 years and probably $140M +. And they still are missing either a 3rd baseman or 1st baseman depending on where they put Youk. Plus Saltalamacchia/Varitek are not exactly offensive powerhouses.

"but that Boston probably won’t want to surrender four prospects for a one-year player. And rightly so."

And San Diego doesn't want to accept less prospects only to see them work out an extension in 4 days.

This is rather shocking and not very good from the Padres perspective. As a Padres fan I wasn't too enthused with the package (mainly the inclusion of Rizzo who I think is overrated and might not be better than Kyle Blanks) but that's probably as good as they can get. Although I guess the good news is that now they will probably keep him for the start of the season.

Also, who exactly does Gonzalez and his agent think will top the Red Sox free agent offer? His options now are basically the Mets, the Cubs and maybe the Dodgers, right? I'm not sure the first two are even preferable to the Padres and with the Dodgers ownership problems I don't see them giving out a Teixeira contract.
