Gonzalez would be crazy to “agree to anything short of the hard and fast contract extension in writing. By him “agreeing to an understanding” he loses all leverage and the Red Sox hold all the cards. For example, if the Sox aren’t satisfied with the progress his shoulder has made they void the deal and he goes back to SD and prospective suitors take that into consideration in any future negotiations. But if he doesn’t “agree to an understanding” he goes back to SD doesn’t have to take a physical (because he’s already under contract with SD) and hits the FA market at the end of next season where he certainly isn’t going to get any less money or years then Boston might try and sign him to now.
