Vicente Padilla: closer?

Dec 6, 2010, 8:55 AM EDT

Vicente Padilla

Dylan Hernandez and Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times report that the Dodgers are still talking to Vicente Padilla. This despite the fact that they now have five starters who are all superior to Vicente Padilla. Solution: Dylan and Mike say that the Dodgers could use him as a swingman or — get this — a closer.

Padilla has come out of the pen exactly once since 2001, but he did begin his career as a relief pitcher so I guess it could happen.  Personally, I would love to have a closer who throws an eephus pitch or whatever that thing Padilla throws is called.

FYI, at his stage in his career Dennis Eckersley had never come out of the bullpen either. Closing games is skill that some pitchers have and others don’t.

“Closing games is skill that some pitchers have and others don’t.”

      No it isn’t.

Based on what? MLB teams keep running the same guys out in the 9th to close games because they want to over pay the closer instead of rotating other seven pitchers in the pen. Next you will tell me that all the guys in the pen have the skill to be starting pitchers.

He seems to have the same temperament as KRod and Ugi Urbina, so, why not?

It’s pretty “iffy” having a pitcher as your closer who is known for hitting batters!
